What is a "Part P” electrician?

Part P is a section of the building regulations introduced in 2005 to ensure that electrical work carried out in domestic premises meets practical safety standards.

Part P applies to all new electrical works and only repairs and the most minor of extensions to existing systems are exempt. Part P applies particularly to work carried out in ’special locations’ such as kitchens and bathrooms.The following types of installation work, among others, are subject to Part P regulations.

Part P regulations covers the following
  • New installation full or partial rewire
  • New consumer unit (fuse box)
  • New circuits – power or lighting
  • Extension to circuit in kitchen or other special location
  • Earthing
  • Central heating/room heating/hot water/boiler/controls
  • Air conditioning/ventilation system/extractor fan
  • Shower (electrically heated or pumped)
  • Cooker
  • Fire/security/environmental control system
  • Lift: vertical shaft or stair lift
